Power Quality Concerns with Integration of RESs into the Smart Power Grid and Associated Mitigation Techniques
Author Name : Mohit Kumar, Anurag Khare
ABSTRACT
The quality of power is affected greatly since the sensitive equipment consists of nonlinear loads as well as power electronic loads which in turn introduce lot of harmonics in to the systems and distorting especially the source side. While considering industrial applications, the power electronics drives are mainly used for automation of the industries which in turn introduces lot of harmonics in to the systems. The effect of such non-linearity also causes disturbance to other consumers and interference in nearby communication networks. Therefore it is very important to overcome these undesirable features. The primary responsibility of the power distribution systems is to provide uninterrupted flow of energy at smooth sinusoidal voltage at the desired magnitude level and frequency to the consumers. However the power distribution system consists of wide variety of nonlinear loads, which significantly affect the quality of power supplies. This ends up producing many power quality problems. Out of many power quality issues, harmonics, voltage sag, swell and unbalance are considered .In order to avoid these issues, a research work carried out to PV (Photo Voltaic) based UPQC devices to mitigate power quality issues such as harmonics, voltage sag, swell and unbalance. The UPQC are mainly used to increase the quality and reliability of the power delivered to the customers since customers are increasingly demanding quality in the power supplied by the electric company. The proposed Paper aims at enhancing the use of PV based UPQC devices in the distribution system, having multiple feeders so as to mitigate power quality issues and also to eliminate the need for additional regulating device to maintain load voltage constant. The effectiveness of the PV based UPQC are verified by their Matlab Simulink Model and Results to maintain Power Quality in Power System.
