Author Name : Mr. J. Vijay, Natarajan P, Thiruppathi M, Gokul V

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the antiurolithiatic activity of pavonia zeylanica (l) cav against ethylene glycol induced urolithiasis in rats.

Materials and Methods: Urolithiasis is induced by ethylene glycol (0.75%v/v) in drinking water were fed to all groups except normal control group animals for 28 days. Ethanolic extract of Pavonia zeylanica (200mg/kg and 400mg/kg) was administered orally for 28 days. Various parameters such as calcium, oxalate, phosphorus, magnesium, uric acid, urea and creatinine were evaluated in urine, serum and kidney homogenate analysis. The kidneys were also sectioned and examine histopathologically studies.

Results: It was observed that the ethylene glycol induced groups elevated the parameters like calcium, phosphorus, oxalate, uric acid, urea and creatinine levels in urine, serum and kidney homogenate. The EEPZ treatments (200mg/kg and 400mg/kg) significantly decreased the elevated levels of parameters in urine as well as serum and kidney homogenate.

Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of Pavonia zeylanica (l) cav has protective effect against urolithiasis.
