Propess Better Than Prostin Gel For Induction of Labor at Term- Fact or Fiction

ABSTRACT

Introduction To assess the safety and efficacy of Propess (Dinoprostone10 mg) a single vaginal insert compared to vaginal prostaglandin gel for induction of labor in term patients.

Method A single centered comparative prospective study of propess with prostaglandin gel was conducted from March 2019 to March 2020. Pregnant women ≥37 weeks were randomized to one of the above and managed in labor as per local induction guidelines in Sohar Hospital. Analysis was in terms of efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness and acceptability by patients and staff.

Results and conclusion A significantly high incidence of hyperstimulation (27%)was noted in propess group (multiparous > nulliparous) versus 4 % in prostin group without adverse maternal or neonatal outcomes. Less need of oxytocin augmentation in propessgroup, (29%) versus 44 % in prostin group made it cost-effective with overall increased patient and staff satisfaction.
