Proximate Analysis and Shelf Estimation of Pearl Millet based Complementary Feeding Food

Author Name : Shobhita Kumari, Neetu Singh, Prashant Sagar

ABSTRACT Different formulation of pearl millet-based weaning food were suggested by blending pearl millet (Pennisetumtyphoides) with various combination and quantities of locally available legumes as a source of protein such as pigeon peas, mung beans in the addition of peanut and skimmed milk. The proximate compositions of the formulated food were determined and statistically compared with their respective means in two common proprietary infant formulae. The formulated food was found to compete with both proprietary formulae as its proximate composition sample T1(protein; 14.1%, Carbohydrate; 64.2%, 5 fat; , crude fibre; 10%, ash; 3.6% and moisture; 3.2%) was quite comparable to the mean proximate composition of both proprietary formulae sample 2 (protein; 13.6%, Carbohydrate; 62.54%,fat; 5.2 %, crude fibre; 13%, ash; 2.16% and moisture; 3.5%).The complementary blends compared well with the usual formula and can be advised for use as home prepared, less expensive infant foods during the complementary feeding time as breast feeding continues.
