R. K. Narayan’s Portrayal of Indian Middle Class Women in the Selected Novels

ABSTRACT R.K. Narayan is one of the most well-known Indian English writers and a major contributor to English fiction. He has presented the lives of women around and depicted women characters with varied facets in his fiction. He has provided a wide gallery of both male and female characters in his writings. He is a writer who could portray women drawing their psychological urges. One of the most important features of his works is the art of characterization. Through his portrayals of Indian middle-class families in his works, he has distinguished himself as a master of characterization. Narayan’s works depict the part of women in family and society and show a gradational metamorphosis in these women characters and evolve them to their stylish at the societal spectrum. This paper examines the various womanish characters – modern as well as traditional and the differences in their thought patterns, habits, intentions, beliefs, conduct, aspirations, and their way of looking at life. It also portrays a paradigm shift that the female characters experience by rendering a communication to the world around them. The rapid social transformation happened in Indian culture after Independence, and a new kind of woman developed as a force in all spheres of life. His books depict the transition of Indian women from a traditional society to one that is advanced and contemporary.
