ABSTRACT

Indefinite physical processes responsible for the formation of geotechnical materials such as soil and rocks, is the main cause of unpredictability and inadequate understanding of the phenomenon with which these materials behave. In geotechnical engineering, knowing soil properties and behavior, is crucial for design and serviceability evaluation of any construction. The imprecise and complex formation processes, tend to lend intricacies in constitutive modeling of behavior of these geotechnical materials. Conventional models in the form of design charts, tables, empirical formulae; already being used are rather simplified and limited in their ability, efficiency and application. Therefore, Artificial intelligence (AI), which has presented superior predictive capabilities and outstanding recompenses; is becoming increasingly popular in various geotechnical applications. These AI techniques involve technologies like Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Genetic Programming (GP), Evolutionary polynomial Regression (EPR), Evolutionary programming technique (EPT) and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). In this paper salient features, application and advantages of these techniques has been discussed. The paper also tends to discuss the limitations of these selected technologies.
