Review on Smart Monitoring of Concrete Properties through IoT
Author Name : Sutanu Bhowmik, Dr Biman Mukherjee, Souvik Sarma
ABSTRACT The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology into the construction industry has revolutionized traditional methods of concrete curing and structural monitoring. Concrete, as a critical material in infrastructure, demands precise curing and real-time monitoring to ensure optimal performance and durability. Traditional methods, characterized by manual processes and excessive resource consumption, are often inefficient and unsustainable. This study explores the application of IoT-based systems to address these limitations through innovations in automated data collection, real-time monitoring, and enhanced resource efficiency. IoT-enabled systems utilize advanced sensors and cloud-based platforms to monitor parameters such as temperature, humidity, and moisture, ensuring accurate and timely adjustments during curing. By leveraging the maturity method and embedded sensors, IoT enhances non-destructive evaluation of concrete strength and facilitates decisions that improve construction timelines and safety. Additionally, IoT systems mitigate risks such as plastic shrinkage and cracking while enabling sustainable practices through reduced resource consumption and predictive maintenance. Despite challenges in scalability, connectivity, and initial costs, IoT adoption aligns with the broader goals of digitalization and sustainability, offering transformative solutions for modern construction needs.
