Risk Factors, Mechanism of Hypersensitivity Reactions, Management of Intravenous Iron Formulations

ABSTRACT

Intravenous iron preparations are preferred for treating iron deficiency anaemia when oral iron supplements are failed to meet the demand . Various IV iron formulations are available in the market like iron dextran,iron sucrose, ferric carboxymaltose, sodium ferric gluconate etc.These  iv iron formulations apart from treating anaemia,rarely causes allergic / Hypersensitivity reactions due to presence of risk factors and various immunological reactions that occur in the body . The pathogenesis of these reactions and the management for preventing and treating the hypersensitivity reactions are listed.
