Author Name : Munmi Bora

ABSTRACT Throughout the history, women have been the unsung heroes of countless social movements, quietly but powerfully shaping the course of social change. India has produced great women throughout her long social, political and cultural existence. The year 1920-1047 Indian women struggle of the irrespective of caste, sex and cred against British rule, and had witness the eruption of the great nationalist movement in India under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi to make India free from the British slavery. During this struggle movement Assamese women also contributed to the independence on non-violent Gandhian way. Along with the men, the women of Assam also responded to each and every phase of the freedom movement launched by Gandhiji, namely, the Non-Cooperation Movement 91920-21), Civil Disobedience Movement (1930), and the Quite India Movement (1942). They participated in the movement by organizing processions and picketing and undertaking tours to the remotest areas to propagate the message of the movement. In this paper an attempt is being made to assess and explain the role of the women of Assam in the freedom struggle in India.
