Role of DNA Profiling in Criminal Investigation

ABSTRACT

 

Forensic DNA database system constitutes in its ambit an essentially significant investigative resource for the present-day criminal justice system.  The consolidated and computerized repository of DNA profiles in a database expediates the systematic comparison and automated matching of crime scene samples and individual profiles. Innumerable countries engage in the activity of using forensic DNA-databases to spot out the onus of the criminal scenes. DNA profiling, in tracing the people who are suspected of committing a crime has proved to be a major advantage for the criminal investigators.  DNA profiling when used wisely can benefit in numerous ways to convict the person who has committed serious crimes andacquit the people who are innocent. DNA database pertains to a computer database accommodating in it the records of DNA profiles of individuals. Generally, there exists two different sources of these DNA profiles: crime scene DNA samples and individuals’ DNA samples. The usage of DNA databases in criminal investigations requires an individual’s identity to be revealed only on the ground if there exists a match between their DNA profile and a crime scene DNA profile.

This paper emphasis and throws light upon the current DNA techniques used for the criminal investigation and also, the scope and admissibility of the same in the Indian Legal System. The Limitations and recommendations required for efficiency in the Indian Legal system have also been listed that would provide great help in rendering speedy justice to the accused.
