Role of Zoological Parks Ex-Situ Conservation and Wildlife Protection in India
Author Name : Dr. Rafia Yasmeen
ABSTRACT Zoological parks in India are unique ecosystems that provide numerous services of local and national significance. Apart from their primary function in education and research, many zoos serve as natural habitats for free-ranging animals. Moreover, such parks are sources of carbon sequestration, air purification, water purification, noise attenuation, etc. Zoos are essentially dry offices where creatures are restricted to nooks and shown to general society, and in which they may likewise be reproduced. Such offices incorporate zoos, safari parks, creature amusement parks, aviaries, butterfly zoos, and reptile focuses, as well as untamed life safe-havens and nature holds where guests are permitted. Present day conservation zoos, which provide a vast spectrum of services for species and society. However, in the absence of a new model, the value of zoos has been underestimated and under supported. We propose a new model and assessment framework for viewing conservation zoos, with the zoo at the centre of a web of conservation and societal activities. We acknowledge zoos' potential as conservation hubs able to provide advice and skills to communities and policymakers. We also reflect on the criticisms and conservation challenges faced by zoos that may prevent them from fulfilling their full potential and how these might impact their future roles. This paper examines the significance of zoological parks and ex-situ conservation and wildlife protection in India.
