Seismic Performance Evaluation of an Irregular Building with Lateral Force Resisting System Provide Shear Wall with Openings

Author Name : Madhu Yadav, Rajiv Banerjee

ABSTRACT

Shear walls are commonly used as a vertical structural element in modern high-rise buildings to resist lateral loads caused by wind and earthquakes. Because of functional requirements such as doors and windows, a shear wall may have many openings, which can have a significant impact on the overall seismic response of the structure. This research is being conducted on a ten story frame shear wall building using linear elastic analysis and the finite element software ETABS, as well as the response spectrum method. The objective is to study the time period, displacement, base shear and story drift of a shear wall with openings arranged vertically, horizontally, and zigzag, and by varying the percentage of openings in the zigzag direction. The comparative results revealed that the time period, displacement, base shear, story drift, and the area around the openings are all affected by the arrangement of the openings. Finally, the zigzag arrangement of openings in shear walls is recommended for use in practice because it provides 4% better performance than other opening arrangements. Also, a structure with a shear wall and openings arranged in a zigzag pattern with an opening area less than 16.67% of the shear wall area performs approximately 4% better in terms of base shear, story displacement, time period, and story drift than a structure with an opening area greater than 16.67% of the shear wall area.
