Sequencing in Operations Research
Author Name : Dr. Amrish Kumar Srivastav
ABSTRACT The selection of an appropriate order in which to service waiting customers is called sequencing. Such type of problem we have to determine the order or sequence and with the jobs which are to be processed through machines, so as to minimize the total processing time. Here the effectiveness measure may be time, cost, mileage etc. In such type of problem time or cost that is to be minimized in the function of the order of sequence. Suppose we have a problem in which n tasks to be possessed on some or all of m different machines in which the total effectiveness depends on the order of processing. There are (n!)m possible sequences for the problem. Since (n)M is very large number, hence it is very difficult to find the effectiveness measure for all the sequences and select one suitable sequence which optimize the effectiveness measure. Such type of problem is called sequencing problem.
