Smart Load Scheduling Strategy Utilizing Optimal Charging of EVs in Power Grids

ABSTRACT

Nations all over the world are worried about the negative effects of internal combustion engines that run on fossil fuels. Governments all over the world are pushing for a wider adoption of electric vehicles to reduce environmental problems as a result of recent technological advancements in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. However, the increased number of electric vehicles in the power system distribution network will pose a significant threat to existing electric grids. In order to reduce the cost of charging for electric utilities (EU) and EV owners, this study used an optimization technique to develop a smart charging schedule. By providing power to charge EV batteries during off-peak hours, this will effectively level utility load throughout the day. On the other hand, utilities will take power from EV batteries to reduce peak power demand during peak power demand hours of the day. In order to reduce the cost of charging, this study utilized quadratic programming as the optimization technique.
