The competition between weapons and armor is indeed old and endless. But shifting from weapons having the upper hand to armor does change warfare for a while, i.e. castles and trenches led to a different style of warfare than when canons and tanks made them less effective.

Armour in real life takes all this into account. Composite armour is usually used for vehicle armour, but it's certainly used on personnel. The idea is that different layers do different things to redirect the energy of the bullet. We have a material that is bulletproof, so we don't have to give one more thought to that part. Even better. The wording in this case is that we don't even need to take in account it can become weaker if it's tightly strung over metal for example. So all we need to do, is redirect the energy, while most penetrative problems are solved.

Do keep in mind that most current armours aren't a "perfect" protection. Most are unable to diffuse the energy enough, so you'll get huge bruises and might get incapacitated, yet alive. Repetitive shots can damage armour enough to penetrate, which is more easily done with automatic weapons. Even with my above example of new armour you could be fine at the first shot, but quick follow ups could still give you nasty bruises and even death if the material gets too close to the body, as many others point out. Each advancement in armour can have many detrimental effects on the weapons to keep up the battle.

Now to overcome, these adverse effect there has been huge amount of research and development over decades to make a perfect armor which can sustain all threats. A lot of money, time & resources has been invested to create this. Each new war on the battle-field on this planet accelerates this race of weapon &armor exponentially.

With the development of new technologies in design and production this race is speeding up more rapidly. There has been several developments and numerous products related to CAD, CAM & CAE. With the increasing capability of computers and decreasing size there is a huge possibility of simulation software in R&D of armor. Our prior approach is primarily to carry out basic tests on these armor via simulation software. It will be also great if we can challenge or replace the physicalactual processes to save resources and create path for future digital development in R&D’s, although there will always be need of a last physical process test to eliminate any possible threat to life.
