ABSTRACT Solar energy derived from the unlimited energy source Sun is the most promising renewable energy source at present. It is converted into electrical energy through photovoltaic conversion. The various photovoltaic cells developed till now are classified into four generations-first generation cells are made of silicon and GaAs, second generation cells are made of amorphous silicon, cadmium sulphide, cadmium telluride etc, third generation cells include dye-sensitized solar cells, organic cells, perovskite solar cells, quantum dot solar cells etc and fourth generation solar cells are primarily graphene and carbon nanotube based solar cells. This article gives an overview of the basics of different generation solar cells with their merits and demerits. It also briefly discusses future trends in solar cell technology.
