Space Debris Management System: Types, Controls, and Impacts

ABSTRACT The proliferation of space activities in recent decades has resulted in a growing amount of space debris within Earth's orbit, which presents substantial obstacles to the long-term viability of space operations. This review paper offers a succinct analysis of space debris’ current situation, its causes, and the pressing need for efficient management techniques. The first section of the paper provides an overview of the sources of space debris, which include abandoned satellites, spent rocket stages, and collision-related debris. The growing number of debris particles creates worries about possible collisions, which put operational satellites and spacecraft at risk as well as making the debris problem worse by creating more fragments. The review also emphasizes how international efforts to mitigate and manage space debris are changing. To reduce the risk of collisions and stop the further spread of debris, it examines cooperative projects, rules, and regulations put forth by international organizations and spacefaring countries. Innovations in early warning systems and tracking technologies that improve situational awareness and make collision avoidance maneuvers easier are given special consideration. The paper also explores new ideas and technologies for passive debris mitigation and active debris removal (ADR). The review evaluates these strategies' efficacy and viability as well as their potential contributions to lowering the total population of space debris. It also covers the legal and financial ramifications of debris management, highlighting the international community's collective accountability for maintaining the long-term viability of space activities. To sum up, this brief overview provides a thorough understanding of the various difficulties that space debris presents as well as the continuous initiatives to control and lessen its effects. To protect the orbital environment for future generations, humanity must continue to expand its space exploration with a shared commitment to responsible space activities and the creation of creative solutions.
