Author Name : Ramesh V. Rayannavar, Dr. Smt. V.B. Saviramath

ABSTRACT Slums are “congested urban or sub-urban residential areas characterised by deteriorating and insanitary housing, poverty and social disorganization”. The process of urban growth simultaneously leads to the formation or growth of slum. No city in the world is free from the clutches of slums. These are common features in both developed and developing countries. On an average, one fourth of the urban population living in these filthy areas. Slums tend to grow with development of urban areas as towns and cities pull the people from surrounding areas because of their employment opportunities and better living standard. However, it is very difficult to unskilled labourers get better wages immediately. Hence, they encroach public places and construct temporary houses where they have neither basic facilities nor the basic services. Haveri district with total 86 slums which are distributed in seven taluks have been witnessing the mushroom like growth of slums. These problematic areas are adversely affecting the slum dwellers as well as other citizens of the city. Further, they are posing serious problems in urban planning. Thus, to improve the condition of urban areas, there is need to improve the slums first. In this context, the study spatio-temporal pattern of slums becomes meaningful for environmental modification and ameliorating the problems of urban areas so that the better civic amenities could be provided to both slum dwellers and other residents of urban areas. Thus, the present study makes an attempt to study the spatio-temporal patterns of slums in Haveri district with the help of both primary and secondary data. And simple statistical techniques like graphs, charts have been used to analyse the data.
