Status of Women in Bodo Society as Reflected in a Short Story of Jonil Kr. Brahma

ABSTRACT
The Bodo society is patriarchal. In traditional Bodo society daughters did not enjoy the right of property inheritance. However, they could inherit property if there was no male child in a family. Moreover, even after their marriage they can enjoy such properties. The position of women is never regarded inferior to man though boys are more preferred than the girls. Bodo women enjoy equal freedom with man in performing their functions. They are exceedingly industrious. They play an important role in family life. In socio-economic life and in socio-religious functions they play important role. Also they take part actively in paddy cultivation. Nevertheless, Bodo women produce necessary clothes for her and also for other family members. In addition, they help the family economy by farming poultry, animal husbandry etc. Nowadays, Bodo women enjoy equal rights and status in all sphere of life. They hold prestigious position in different government and semi-government offices. Now, some of them help family economy doing business or contract works. Besides, they take active role in different political and social organizations. Moreover, they also actively take parts in various activities like- games and sports, music, dance etc. Status of woman is fairly reflected in many short stories to a great extent.
