STUDIES ON INDIGENOUS HERBAL REMEDIES FOR DIABETES MELLITUS USED BY BUDDHIST IN INDIA

ABSTRACT
The present paper highlight the traditional phytotherapy of fifteen indigenous medicinal plants for the treatment and control of diabetes among the different Buddhist people and rural Population of India while species of Acacia nilotica (L), Aegel marmelos, Asparagus racenosa, azadiraehta indica, Bacopa monnieri, Butea Monosperma, Casia fistula, Catharonthus roseus, Centella asiatica, ficus bengaelensis, Ficus religosa, Gymnema sylvertre, Syzygium Cumini terminalia chebula and Allium Cepa etc. are used only casually by one or two Buddhist people. Botanical name, vernacular name, family, distribution, plant parts used and mode of application among different Buddhist along with their biological activities are provided. It stressed that further investigations particularly on pharmacology is to be initiated urgently, so that much cheaper and safe drugs based on indigenous plants materials are provided for treatment of such a deadly disease.
