INTRODUCTION

The tribal population groups form about 635 biological isolates (tribes and sub-tribes) which constitutes 8.08% (about 84.3 million) of the total population of India (as per 2001 census). Tribal communities in India constitute the largest tribal population in the world. About 84.3 million persons have been enumerated in the country (excluding Jammu & Kashmir) as members of the Scheduled Tribes. These tribal communities who constitute the major part of India are highly vulnerable to many hereditary disorders causing high degree of morbidity and mortality. Among these hereditary disorders thalassemia’s and haemoglobinopathies constitute a major part.
