ABSRTRACT
Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album L.) it may be considered as one of the world most valuable commercial timber as it is currently valued globally for its heartwood & oil. Sandalwood is commercially known as the East Indian sandalwood and its oil the East Indian sandalwood oil. In the 19th Century, Indian sandalwood oil was added to pharmacopoeias is of Britain, Germany and Belgium, notably then for cystitis and venereal diseases. Sandalwood oil is obtained by steam distillation of heartwood powder. Sandalwood trees are generally distributed in southern and southwestern parts of the state. Sandalwood is used as in Ayurvedic for astringent, digestive health, antiseptic, hair health and also stimulant sleep. In Ayurveda the sandalwood oil is treated as cooling, exhilarating, expectorant properties. In india nearly 98% of the total sandalwood area is in Karnataka, Tamilnadu. Sandalwood referred is locally as a Chandana and Shrigandha as well as in Karnataka regarded a ‘state tree’ of Karnataka. Santalum album is belonging to family Santalaceae. The heart wood oil of the tree is treasured for it aroma and one of the finest natural material for carving.
