The Effect of Family Environment on Self-Esteem of Adolescents in Relation to Their Socioeconomic Study
Author Name : Dr. Pankaj
ABSTRACT This study investigates the influence of family environment on the self-esteem of adolescents, considering the backdrop of their socioeconomic status (SES). Self-esteem is a critical aspect of adolescent development, impacting various domains of their lives, including academic achievement, social relationships, and mental well-being. The family environment, characterized by factors such as parental support, communication patterns, and family cohesion, plays a significant role in shaping adolescents' self-perceptions. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was gathered from a diverse sample of adolescents from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Preliminary findings suggest that family environment significantly affects adolescent self-esteem, with variations observed based on socioeconomic status. Higher SES families tend to provide greater emotional support, opportunities for achievement, and access to resources that bolster self-esteem. Conversely, adolescents from lower SES backgrounds may face challenges such as economic stress, familial discord, and limited resources, which can negatively impact self-esteem. For this study the data was collected by using tools- Family Environment Scale (FES) by Sanjay Vohra and Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) by Coppersmith.
