The Indian Tribal Folk Hero, Birsa Munda

ABSTRACT

The Munda rebellion was one of the most tribal revolts in India under colonial rule and one of the heroes of this revolution was Birsa Munda. He was a great tribal leader and folk Hero, freedom fighter and belonging to the Munda community. He was a pioneer of the Renaissance of the people of tribal community and they consider him a Dhartiaaba (The Earthly God). Birsa Munda establish a new religion called Birsahit. The monotheistic munda religion was propagated in the tribal society. Through his religion he spread a strong anti-British sentiment and organised thousands of natives to form a Gorilla Bahini to attack the British raj. In the history of rebellion The Munda rebellion is known as ulgulan in Mundari language. The aim of this rebellion was to establish the Munda kingdom and forest rights. Although the Munda rebellion ceased after the mysterious death of Birsa Munda, it was of immense important to the whole of India, including the tribal community.
