The Paradox of Caste-Based Reservations: Empowering or Entrenching

ABSTRACT In the Indian state of Haryana, as in the broader national context, the debate over caste-based reservations encapsulates a paradoxical dilemma: do these policies empower marginalized communities or do they inadvertently entrench caste identities and perpetuate social divisions? The issue of caste-based reservations in Haryana, home to a diverse population comprising various caste groups, including Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs), is emblematic of this complex socio-political conundrum. Historically rooted in centuries of systemic discrimination and social hierarchy, caste-based reservations were introduced as a constitutional mandate to redress historical injustices and promote social equality. In Haryana, where caste identities often intersect with politics, economics, and social relations, reservations have played a significant role in shaping access to education, employment, and political representation for marginalized communities. However, the implementation and impact of caste-based reservations in Haryana have sparked debates over their efficacy, fairness, and long-term consequences. Proponents argue that reservations have been instrumental in providing opportunities for socio-economic upliftment and political empowerment to historically disadvantaged groups.
