The Role of Folklore and Folktales in English Literature

ABSTRACT Folktales or Folklores are an important source of stories in children's literature. And yet, these tales were not originally intended for children. Using Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Pigs as examples, this chapter explores folktales inchildren's books, their history, and the forms they take. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which past and recent scholarship has shaped and changed our understanding of these tales. New directions in research are also discussed
