The Role of Handicraft in Folklore Communication

ABSTRACT

Crafts are an integral part of the folk life through centuries, remaining as a spectator to the cultural transformations and civilization right from the Indus civilization to the modern contemporary lifestyle.  Folks have a seamless blend of their life with the handicrafts across the rural and urban living contexts. Tracing back to the archaeological spotting of various forms of handicrafts through stone weaponry, clay pottery, wooden functional aids and craved objects, metal utilitarian, metal artifacts and so on strongly form the evidences of the folk and their lifestyle practices. This paper articulates the role handicraft as a strong visual medium of communication of the historical and cultural significance. A spectrum of handicraft literature is analysed in a chronological order and analysed to get deeper insights of each of these artefacts identified in communicating the stories of people. The analysis of this array of handicrafts further prompts us to establish the relation between handicraft and folk as a strong physical medium of communication and functional aids
