The role of Social Reformers in the Educational Movement of the Bengal Renaissance

ABSTRACT

The present research has found that during the year 1800-1900, made efforts for the establishment of vernacular schools, change principles of education and change the educational system ; translation of Indian religious books, modernization of Indian society. Besides, Missionary education gave birth to certain evils also that birth of social classes, absence of national feelings in the missionary education system. The main purposes of this study were to study the overall status of Bengal Renaissance; study the nature of Bengal Renaissance; discuss the extent of social change brought about by the effect of renaissance on education in Bengal. The methodology of research was Historical method and the sources examined were the primary and secondary sources, documentary analysis, critical interpretation and logical discussion were used. To study led to the following conclusions: stress on the analysis of the development of education from inside along with the larger social context in which the educational institutions had to grow. We are concluding that the new Education brought about a profound change in outlook on life and society in Bengal.
