The Social Status of Assamese Women As Reflected In the Short Stories of Awahon Magazine

ABSTRACT
The Awahon Age is one of the richest periods in the history of Assamese literature. In this period that the Assamese short story showed marked artistic developments and launched into diverse aspects of life. The picture of life that is offered in the stories of Awahon is that of a backward society disfigured by such social evils of dowry, child marriage, age long superstition, torture of the woman by the family members and society etc. It is clear from the short stories published in Awahon magazine that most intellectuals of that time were thinking about women status, women equality. The short stories reveal the men mentality and highlights gender inequality between men and women.
