The Status of English Language in India

ABSTRACT In a country which has more than hundred languages, English has become the most prominent one. The use of English has become a necessity in India. It has been given prime importance as children have been taught English from kinder garden to middle school and high school. The use of English was limited before the invasion of Britishers. Since the set up of East India Company, the common language spoken among the British slowly started to spread to the people of India. The Indian workers working for the British had to learn the language as it was their only mode of communication. This research paper brings out the past, present and future of English in India and how it has affected our society and moulded the culture that we live in, the way in which the society has helped in changing the language. The “Social Networking Era” in which everything is in English has also helped a lot of teenagers and others to improve the language. English is a global language that connects people from various cultures. In India, English has a significant role in education, business, and communication. English serves as a bridge between different linguistic communities in India, promoting unity and mutual understanding. It is crucial in the Indian business sector. It aids in international trade and commerce, contributing to India’s economic growth. The growth of the country is so rapid that even the language is growing along with it. The importance of English Language is brought out in this paper. How the method of its usage affect the current generation compared to how it was in the previous generation and what the future hold for English in India has also discussed in this paper.
