The Study of Medicinal Importance of Coumarins and their Analogues as Potent antimicrobials

Author Name : Nehakumari N. Gohil

ABSTRACT

Coumarin is an aromatic compound that has a bicyclic structure with lactone carbonyl groups widely distributed in the plant kingdom isolated from plant product tonka bean, coumarou in 1820. Coumarin and its derivatives are present in many organisms (plants, bacteria, fungi etc.) are critical metabolites composed of fused benzene ring and α-pyrone ring. Coumarins display diverse pharmacological activities like anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulants, anti-tumor, anti-HIV, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anticancer, etc. have intrigued chemists and medicinal chemists for decades to explore the natural coumarins or synthetic analogs for their applicability as drugs. Due to unique biological and chemical properties coumarin derivatives possess great technological potential in the agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, laser and cosmic industries. Numerous research reports have indicated the coumarin nucleus is a potential candidate for development of pharmacologically important drugs. The present review shows analysis of various reports on naturally as well as the synthetically derived biologically active coumarin derivatives in the broad field of drug discovery.
