The Supreme Court Amendment Bill (Number of Judges), 2019

Lok Sabha passed the Supreme Court Amendment Bill (Number of Judges), on August 5, 2019 by the Minister of Justice Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad. The Bill amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) of the Act, 1956. It helps meet the longterm need for capacity building for Supreme Court judges to resolve pending cases that could be significantly reduced. Key Features of the Bill The bill to increase the powers of judges in the Supreme Court by 10% which means to 33 from the current 30 (excluding the Chief Justice of India). There are currently 31 SC authorized powers (including CJI).
