Author Name : Jagadeesh.V, John Britto.M
ABSTRACT
Burnout is a state when someone feels emotionally and physically drained or exhausted. Burnout is usually observed in people who work in human services. Now it is also an emerging issue in IT industry.
This study is aimed at finding the most common interventions that companies use to manage burnout. It is known that burnout is caused by prolonged exposure to chronic stress. As a result the person experiences physical exhaustion, mental exhaustion, and cynicism. Chronic stress could be caused by number of reasons like high job demands, low job resources, social support, and less job control.
The reason this study is done is to find the most commonly used interventions to manage burnout so people can look at the individual techniques and incorporate it into their own organization. Or in future different interventions can be compared in terms of their effectiveness in managing burnout.
This study is conducted using exploratory research method and has about 127 participants. The questions were distributed using e-mail to each participant and their responses were collected and interpreted concluding that majority of the respondent’s organization offered recreational activities to manage their stress in order to prevent burnout. There is also no difference in how frequently both genders experience chronic stress; also there is no significant relationship between hours of work and how frequently the respondents experience chronic stress. Also majority of the respondents reported that they experience physical exhaustion when they experienced chronic stress.
Key words: Cynicism, Chronic stress, Burnout.
