The Wonders of Piper Betle Linn: A Systematic Review

ABSTRACT Piper betle Linn, commonly known as betel leaf, has been an important part of traditional medicine and traditions in various communities for centuries. Its diverse nature, from medical to socio-cultural, has attracted the attention of many researchers worldwide. This systematic review aims to comprehensively investigate the various pharmacological activities, therapeutic potential and cultural value of Piper betle Linn. Pharmacologically, since ancient time in India, Piper betel Linn has been regarded as the most auspicious leaf. It has been relied heavily on the bioactivities of pharmacology, such as antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective attributes. The pharmacological activities of betel leaves mainly due to the presence of biomolecules such as flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids, and essential oils. Also in traditional medicine, Piper betle Linn has shown efficient results in the treatment of various diseases, including oral diseases, gastrointestinal problems, respiratory diseases and skin diseases.Its therapeutic potential warrants further investigation to harness its benefits for the advancement of modern medicine while respecting and preserving its cultural heritage. This review will unveil Piper betle Linn, which has been considered as the leaf of prosperity in Indian traditions, as a nature-healing boon. Traditional knowledge meets modern scientific investigations, to document the enlighten of its significance in Ayurveda. This review is a ready reckoner of the versatile betel leaf; highly beneficial for researchers, medical practitioners, and cultural lovers as well.
