ABSTRACT
Background:
Aims: The present research work aimed to formulate and assess the topical antifungal activity of Croton Sparsiflorus plant extract with the lavender oil against Trichophytonsps.
Methods: Twelve different ointment formulations were prepared & evaluated for the bioactivity against the virulent fungal strains (Trichophytonrubrum and Trichophytonmentagrophytes) through well diffusion method and compared zone of inhibition with standard antifungal drug Tolnaftate.
Results: Among the prepared test ointments, standard drug 0.5 g, control 0.5 ml, plant extract 0.5 g, and lavender oil 0.5 ml; the zone of inhibition for Trichophytonrubrum strain was observed to be maximum with plant extract. The results of the present study confirmed that only FAformulation showed a maximum zone of inhibition against Trichophytonrubrum.
Conclusions: The results confirmed that the antifungal activity increases with the increase in the concentration of the plant extract. The highest concentration of plant extract of 5% ZOI was found to be 4.33cm which was almost equivalent to the zone of inhibition of the standard Tolnaftate which is 4 cm. The optimized formula for ointment formulation was found to be FA formulation that utilized the emulsifying wax.
