ABSTRACT

Transdermal patch is a medicated adhesive patch that’s placed on the skin to deliver so as to attain systemic absorption of drug at a predetermined rate over a prolonged period of time. In Transdermal Drug Delivery System the delivery of the active ingredients of the drug occurs by the means of skin. Skin is an effective medium from which absorption of the drug takes place and enters the circulatory system. Various types of transdermal patches are used to incorporate the active ingredients into the circulatory system via skin. The main advantage of patch includes controlled drug release with minimum side effects, improve bioavailability, bypass first pass metabolism, increase patient compliance etc. There are factors such as physicochemical, biological which affect the bioavailability of transdermal medicament. To improve such characters transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) was emerged which will improve the therapeutic efficacy and safety of drugs by more precise (i.e. site specific) placement within the body thereby reducing both the size and number of doses. Different kind of transdermal patch is prepared by varying methods. Transdermal patches may be evaluated by interaction studies, folding endurance, thickness of the patch, weight uniformity, drug content, in-vivo and in-vitro studies. The review covers general aspect like significant properties of TDDS, advantages, disadvantages, basic component of TDDS, type of transdermal patch, method of preparation of transdermal patch and evaluation.
