Typing Methods of Staphylococcus Aureus
Author Name : Amit Karmakar
For epidemiological analysis and to inhibit and manage outbreaks of Staphylococcus aureus, suitable typing methods are required. Current challenges for MRSA typing are focused on selecting the most appropriate technique in terms of efficiency, reliability, ease of performance and cost involved. Newer technologies involving sequencing of various genes are coming up as broadly applicable and high throughput typing systems. At present these methods have been restored with molecular genotyping. The genotyping methods can be separated into sequence-based staphylococcal protein A (spa) typing and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) andnon-sequence based restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A typing technique is considered, successful when it is simple, inexpensive, reproducible, with sufficient discriminatory power and is widely available. A need for harmonisation of typing techniques by subsequent standard protocols is emphasised to establish investigation networks and enable worldwide MRSA control.
