Urban Well-being: Maximizing Mental Health benefits through thoughtful Urban Design
Author Name : M Senthil, S Jayalakshmi
ABSTRACT The growing field of urban design and planning has increasingly recognized the profound impact of urban environments on mental health. This paper synthesizes a broad spectrum of research to explore the complex relationship between urban spaces and the psychological well-being of their inhabitants. Through a systematic literature review, we uncover how factors such as green spaces, social cohesion, environmental stressors, and urban aesthetics contribute to or detract from mental health outcomes. Our study extends beyond the identification of urban stressors to encompass the restorative potential of well-designed urban spaces that promote physical activity, social interaction, and access to nature. The findings underscore the necessity of cross-disciplinary collaboration in crafting urban environments that not only mitigate mental health risks but also enhance the overall well-being of city dwellers. This paper culminates in a set of evidence-based recommendations for urban planners, policymakers, and mental health professionals, aimed at fostering urban spaces that support and nurture mental health in the face of growing urbanization challenges. Through this comprehensive exploration, we contribute to an increasing dialogue on creating resilient, health-promoting urban landscapes for the future.
