ABSTRACT Introduction: Frictionless mechanics uses loop in a continuous arch wire for retraction of teeth during space closure in fixed orthodontic treatment. Friction is a force that acts as a resistance to the relative motion of objects placed in contact with each other. The advantage of loop mechanics is the absence of friction occurring between brackets and the arch wire during space closure. Case report:An 18-year-old male patient reported to the department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics and was diagnosed as an Angle’s Class I malocclusion with upper and lower anterior crowding, a Class II skeletal base and a clockwise rotation of the mandible (vertical grower). Treatment plan included therapeutic extraction of all four first premolars followed by fixed mechanotherapy. Vertical tear drop loop was fabricated and placed during the stage II of orthodontic treatment to facilitate retraction with type B anchorage. Discussion: Stable results were achieved by retraction of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. An ideal over jet and overbite was achieved with relief of the crowding.
