Water Filtration by Using Microfiltration Membrane (Polysulfone Membrane)

ABSTRACT
In India, less than 50 per cent of the population has access to safely managed drinking water (located on premises, available when needed and free of contamination). Chemical contamination of water, mainly through fluoride and arsenic, is present in 1.96 million dwellings. Moreover, two-thirds of India’s 718 districts are affected by extreme water depletion, and the current lack of planning for water safety and security is a major concern. Unsafe drinking water, inadequate availability of water for hygiene, and lack of access to sanitation together contribute to about 88% of deaths from diarrheal diseases. Previously we used to separate substances by consuming energy like thermal separation processes which involved distillation, sublimation or crystallization. In the present project we have prepared Polycarbonate microfiltration membrane for filtrating water. Polycarbonate membrane is prepared by phase inversion method. Filtration of different samples of water from different sources was done and to check the membrane efficiency for bacteria, bacterial culture from unfiltered sample and filtered sample was carried out. It was observed that polycarbonate filter reduces number of colonies after the first filtration.
