Water Infrastructure and Mumbai Floods: Exposing Vulnerabilities and Potential Solutions

Author Name : Ar. Sanika Bhutkar

ABSTRACT Mumbai, one of India’s most populated and economically significant cities, has increasingly faced the devastating consequences of heavy rainfall, frequent flooding, and the overall mismanagement of its water infrastructure. This paper explores various vulnerabilities of Mumbai's water systems, driven by climate change, urbanization, and inadequate urban planning. It focuses on the city's critical water infrastructure issues and suggests potential solutions to manage the flood risks, improve water conservation, and enhance sustainable urban planning. By examining Mumbai's historical evolution, the impact of reclamation on flooding, and the failure of existing water management systems, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the city's water-related challenges and discuss feasible strategies to address them.
