Weight Reduction in Front Suspension Upright of Suprasae Student Formula Car

ABSTRACT
Upright is the part of suspension system which holds several parts like wheel hub, braking calipers and is attached to chassis of vehicle. This paper mainly focuses on design optimization of front wheel upright of a SUPRASAE student formula car. To obtain a lightweight design, the topology optimization method is used and a mathematical model of the design is being created. To obtain this, a geometric model of the primary design of the upright is being subjected to the ultimate loading. The structural optimization performed resulted in mass reduction of approx. 60%. After the whole analysis and optimization process, the upright was machined, assembled in the suspension of the SUPRA vehicle. The final results showed that after weight reduction and amendments in the design, it completely met the requirement which was desired.
