Weld Failure Prediction by FEA using Notch Stress Method

Author Name : Harpreet Singh, Siddharth

ABSTRACT

In the fabrication of steel item, welding play’s important role by joining the metal parts permanently. But weld has its own defects like weld toe or root weld. In this research, the aim is to model a weld to check its strength by finite element method (FEM) and through experimental validation. Geometry, loads and material properties are the main factors which defines the stress distribution in weld. Therefore, it is difficult to develop a weld model for the prediction of stress distribution. So, to fulfil the purpose the effective notch stress approach has been used for weld joint modelling. The effective notch stress method calculates the max stress at a geometrical notch (weld toe or root). Radiustunning at notch of the weld has been done to match the FEA output with the experimental results. Final FEM results have a very good alignment with the experimental results for the welded model with an effective notch radius that is close to 0.2 mm.
