Winter Imagery as Allegorical Elements in Wallace Stevens’ The Snow Man and The Emperor of IceCream

Author Name : Chewe-u Mero, Dr Rosy Tep

ABSTRACT : Poetry uniquely captures the reader through emotions and painting vivid imagery and symbolism, allowing one to express feelings creatively and connect with others. This paper explores the metaphorical meaning of winter imagery in Wallace Stevens' two classic poems, The Snow Man and The Emperor of Ice-Cream. By closely examining these works, the research reveals how Stevens explores deep existential themes and philosophical questions by using winter as a multifaceted metaphor. In The Snow Man, the bleak winter scenery serves as a backdrop for reflection on the nature of reality and the human predicament, signifying clarity of perception and existential awareness. On the other hand, winter is used as a metaphor for the coldness and apathy of life in The Emperor of Ice-Cream, contrasting pleasure with death to highlight how fleeting human existence is. By analyzing the nuanced use of winter imagery in both poems, This study sheds important light on Stevens' poetic style, philosophical stance, and thematic concerns. Stevens asks readers to consider the intricacies of life, mortality, and the pursuit of meaning in a world characterized by impermanence and ambiguity through evocative symbolism and allegorical resonance.
