Awareness, Knowledge and Prevention of Thalassemia in Physiotherapy Students

ABSTRACT
Background: To determine the awareness about thalassemia in physiotherapy students.
Introduction: Thalassemia is a heterogeneous group of hereditary disorders in which there is a reduced rate of synthesis or production of one or more of the ‘globin’ polypeptide chains which lead to ineffective erythropoiesis and anemia. There are two main types of thalassemia alpha and beta thalassemia. The prevalence of thalassemia in India 0.37 per 1,000 fetuses haveHb disorder.
Methodology: Survey study was conducted among 213students in physiotherapy from different private and government colleges in Ahmedabad submitted their responses. Google forms were created with close ended question related to their knowledge about thalassemia and shared through social media.
Result: In survey study of the mean knowledge score was 8.5 the total possible score ranged between 0 - 12 with the higher scores indicating better knowledge .The participants responded in awareness and knowledge of thalassemia in which questions were 19.7% says thalassemia major patients are mentally ill, 56.3%% carrier can develop thalassemia major later on. 28.2% of participants have very less awareness in chorionic villous sampling.
Counclusion: Awareness and knowledge of thalassemia among physiotherapy students had adequate awareness and less awareness in prevention and chronic villus sampling.
