A Comprehensive Review On Tarpana: An Ayurvedic Ocular Rejuvenation Therapy
Author Name : Dr. Murari Sreenivasulu
ABSTRACT Tarpana is a classical Ayurvedic netra kriyākalpa procedure in which medicated ghee is retained over the eyes for a specific duration to nourish, strengthen, and rejuvenate ocular tissues. It is primarily indicated in conditions caused by Vata and Pitta vitiation, such as dry eye syndrome, computer vision fatigue, burning sensation, refractive strain, and early degenerative eye disorders. The procedure works by providing unctuousness, improving tear film stability, reducing ocular inflammation, enhancing local microcirculation, and promoting relaxation of periocular muscles. Modern studies correlate Tarpana with improved epithelial healing, better lubrication, and reduced oxidative stress in ocular structures. As a non-invasive, safe, and holistic intervention, Tarpana holds significant potential as an adjunct therapy in contemporary ophthalmology, especially for chronic, lifestyle-related eye complaints.
