ABSTRACT
Sense organs of human body can be under taken as essential aspects of human life. According to Ayurveda texts Indriyas (Sense organ) are the most important apparatus to gain knowledge for Atma. Acharya Charaka described Indriya as basic elements in differentiating the living and non-living matters. Sensation is the processes of receiving stimulus energies from external environmental source and transforming those energies into neural energy and Physical energy like sound, light, heat is detected by physical receptors cells in the sense organs-eyes, ears, skin, nose and tongue. Indriyas are composed of five elements still specific Mahabhutas dominates specific Indriya. This is the reason behind reception of specific sensation by its respective Indriya. E.g. Agni Mahabhuta dominates chakshundriya and receive knowledge of roopa. Adhisthana of chakshundriya is akshi (Eye) inside body which is embedded with dominance of agni mahabhuta and is responsible for acquisition of special attribute- roopa (Vision). According to Modern science there are about 125 million rods and 6 million cones cells are present in human body. The photoreceptor cell is a specialized type of neuroepithelial cell found in the retina that is capable of visual photo transduction. In the concept of acharyas, gyanendriya is an important tool to gain specific knowledge by conjoined action of Atma, Indriya,Mana and Vishayas.
