ABSTRACT In recent years, Software-Defined Radio (SDR) has emerged as a revolutionary approach to modern wireless communication, enabling greater flexibility and adaptability across multiple frequency bands. Unlike traditional radio systems, SDR replaces hardware components with software-based signal processing, allowing dynamic modulation and frequency adaptation. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on the evolution, design, implementation, and challenges of SDR, with a special focus on multi-band communication. The study highlights key technological advancements, compares hardware- and software-based SDR architectures, and identifies current research gaps. Additionally, this review explores optimization techniques for real-time SDR implementation and its impact on 5G, IoT, and cognitive radio. The findings suggest that while SDR presents significant advantages in adaptability and cost-effectiveness, challenges remain in real-time performance, interoperability, and computational efficiency. Future research should focus on parallel processing, AI-driven spectrum management, and energy-efficient SDR frameworks.
