A Review Article on the Concept of Upashaya & Anupashaya

ABSTRACT

The Ayurvedic approach of diagnosis & treatment of any Vyadhi ( disease ) begins with Roga – Rogi Pareeksha. Examination of the patient is the initial step in clinical medicine followed by planning suitable appropriate therapeutics. Improper Observation of patient by physician, which have not been thoroughly described and disease which have not been diagnosed correctly are going to confuse the physician so that it is very important to diagnose the disease by using appropriate techniques. Knowledge of disease is acquired through Nidana (etiological factor), Purvaroopa (premonitory symptoms), Roopa (clinical features), Upashaya (therapeutic suitability) and Samprapti (pathogenesis). Upashaya & Anupashaya are ancient Ayurvedic techniques to differentiate and diagnose such disorders and to plan accurate remedial measures so that Upashaya and Anupashaya  are important diagnostic tools for Roga Pareeksha. Upashaya & Anupashaya  will be  helpful to understand the diseases. In case of difficulty in diagnosis of a disease due to some mimicking nature of disease in such circumstances Upashaya & Anupashaya thearapy helps  us to diagnose the condition, So the hidden signs of a disease are examined with the help of Upashaya & Anupashaya. Upashaya stage signifies the curability or in- curability of the disease based on observation of 18 subtypes of upashaya .Upashaya also helps us in therapy, so that Upashaya & Anupashaya are very useful for diagnosis as well as management of diseases.
