Advancements in Stabilized Mud Blocks for Sustainable Construction

Author Name : Akash u, Dr. Chethan Gowda R K

ABSTRACT The development of stabilized mud blocks (SMBs) offers a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to traditional building materials, addressing the demand for affordable housing while minimizing environmental impact. This review synthesizes existing literature on the influence of various stabilizers—including cement, lime, industrial by-products like fly ash and Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS), natural fibers, and construction and demolition (C&D) waste—on the structural properties, durability, and environmental impact of SMBs. Emphasis is placed on their suitability for low-cost, load-bearing applications and evolving potential as a mainstream material in sustainable construction. This review also identifies key areas for future research to optimize SMB formulations, with a focus on further incorporating waste materials to align with circular economy principles.
